Introducing art to your home: The simple how-to guide

It’s sometimes a challenge to make our homes more beautiful. This time of year especially, everything tends to be covered in glitter and gaudy colors and scraps of wrapping paper, so it can be difficult to see through the thick layer of Christmas to what your home is really like beneath that.

It’s sometimes a challenge to make our homes more beautiful. This time of year especially, everything tends to be covered in glitter and gaudy colors and scraps of wrapping paper, so it can be difficult to see through the thick layer of Christmas to what your home is really like beneath that. But as you feel suffocated by the sheer amount of Christmas cheer in your home, you’re probably thinking about how you can reintroduce a little art and beauty to your home once the festive season is over.

Look no further – here are some tips to help.

TAKE FAMILY ART CLASSES

As a family Christmas gift, why not go to art classes together? You can learn the basics of how to draw and paint, plus the aesthetics of form, space and design. What’s more, you can bring your creations home and use them as centerpieces in your home. Admittedly they might not be the most beautiful works of art you’ve ever seen if you’re all still learning, but the thought will be there, which is the most important thing!

ADD SOME ART TO THE WALLS

There’s nothing more boring than a completely blank wall. If you are lucky enough to have space in your home, think of it as a blank canvas that you have free reign to fill. Look online for websites where you can buy real oil paintings, if you want some interesting pieces with texture and real color. Prints of your favorite works by artists can also look incredible when put in the right places.

Interior design is an incredible way to bring art into your home. Take a few Saturdays off to look around antiques stores to find something really special from your favorite era, and then make sure that you use it as a focal point in whatever room that you put it in so you can show off your taste and style.

DESIGN ROOMS AROUND ART

Maybe you already have some pieces that you already love. If so, that’s great! You can form other parts of your home around it. If you have paintings that you adore and that you want to make the focal point of your room, arrange your furniture to complement them. Likewise, you can ensure that your color schemes look good with the art within your home. If you paint the walls a neutral color then they won’t clash with your art or take the focus away from them.

LEARN PHOTOGRAPHY

One incredible skill to learn is photography. Even if you can’t get the hang of drawing and painting, if you buy and learn how to use a good quality camera you can learn to take incredible photographs in no time at all. If they’re high resolution, you can blow them up and put them on the wall. Maybe you’re into landscapes and you want to experiment when you’re on your summer vacation, or you’d rather cluster photographs of your kids together. Mount them on wood instead of using traditional frames for a modern twist.
