CCP Ugnayan sa Sining 2023 presents ‘BUN[N]AL: Breaking New Ground for Midanao’

Bun[n]al brings together prominent artists and performing groups from General Santos, Tacurong, Koronadal, Isulan, Sultan Kudarat, Marawi, Tawi Tawi and Davao to collaborate and explore exciting new directions for Mindanao’s creative expressions.

The CCP Cultural Exchange Department’s Ugnayan sa  Sining, a regional collaborative productions program, will present BUN[N]AL: Breaking New Ground for Mindanao on November 24, 2023,  3pm and 7pm, at the Holy Cross of Davao College (HCDC) gymnasium.

Bun[n]al brings together prominent artists and performing groups from General Santos, Tacurong, Koronadal, Isulan, Sultan Kudarat, Marawi, Tawi Tawi and Davao to collaborate and explore exciting new directions for Mindanao’s creative expressions.

The performance is directed by acclaimed director and curator Leonardo ‘Bing’ Cariño of General Santos City and written by award-winning writer Karlo Antonio Galay David of Davao City.  Bun[n]al seeks to dispel Mindanao’s stereotypes of cultural stagnancy with innovative collaborations between traditional and contemporary performers. Meranaw, Sama, Monuvu, and other cultural performing groups work together with Budots, Rap, Hip Hop, and contemporary performers.

Literally means “to strike” in Bisaya, ‘bunal’ is a term in colloquial language among Mindanao’s creatives to get things started and pursue excellence. It has a parallelism with ‘bunnal’ in Tausug for “truth.”

The performers hit Mindanao like a gong, making its hidden beauty come out and reverberate.

The collaborating groups are Marawi’s MSU Sining Kambayoka Ensemble, Tawi Tawi’s MSU TCTO Tambuli Cultural Dance Troupe, Davao’s University of Mindanao Chorale, and DJ Mackoy Salinas.

After its premier in Davao City,  Bun[n]al goes on an outreach tour in other regions next year and the following years under the CCP Cultural Exchange Department.

Catch Bun[N]al on November 24, 3pm and 7pm, at the HCDC gymnasium.  For more information, contact the CCP CED at 8(832-1125) local 1709 and/or the HCDC Center for Culture and Arts.
