Black Maria, Christine Torregosa Sioco’s solo exhibition, will run from May 14 to May 28.
This solo art exhibit features new mixed media and sculptural artwork inspired Black Maria, a slang for police wagon being used to transport prisoners. It has also been adopted in less famed comical and literary characters by some authors, graphic novelists-artists, and used as references by musicians; it was also the name used by Thomas Edison in his first silent film theater.
The artist uses this as a metaphor to relate to the body, a vehicle or a vessel that holds the soul as prisoner or rather transport ones and anybody’s soul in different journeys. The soul is infinite, unbroken, limitless, holds the universe within but is always limited and hindered by mere human flaw. “We are all different prisoners inside our own Black Maria.”
Black maria will be exhibited at Local Affairs, an exhibition-project space which promotes artistic work and activities of any kind motivated by community, collaboration and that gathers people together, artists and audience alike in such cultural-artistic contexts. The space welcomes interesting new works, projects and ideas mindful of experiments as an outlet for creative and social discourse.
