The Filfest Cultural Foundation and Insular Life announced the slated opening of the 2014 season with a concert featuring marimbist Dena Fernandez and the Manila Symphony Orchestra under the baton of guest conductor Maestro Ruggero Barbieri on May 31, 8:00PM at the Corporate Centre Auditorium of Insular Life Tower in Filinvest, Alabang.
This concert is presented by Cultural Foundation and Insular Life in cooperation with San Miguel Corporation, Rustan’s, Vivere Hotel, Contis and Philippine Italian Association.
The program includes G. Puccini’s Tregenda from Opera Ballet “Le Villi” (second act), J. Turina’s Orgia from “Danzas Fantasticas”, the Philippine premiere performance of Guatemala’s National Artist Jorge Sarmientos’ “Concerto for Marimba and Orchestra”, A. Dvorak’s IX Symphony “New World”, C. Saint Saens’ Bacchanale from “Samson and Delilah”, N. Rota’s “Symphonic Suite”, Arturo Marquez’s “Danzon No.2” and N. Abelardo’s “Mutya ng Pasig”.
Guatemala’s National Artist Jorge Sarmientos is considered as one of the world’s most important South American composers. His works have been performed all over the world and his first concerto composed in 1957. Ms. Dena Fernandez, the country’s premiere marimbist will perform with the Manila Symphony Orchestra. Maestro Ruggero Barbieri, the former Musical Director of the Philippine Philharmonic Orchestra will lead the Philippine premiere.
Italy’s multi awarded film music composer Nino Rota is known for his works that include movie themes for The Godfather, Romeo and Juliette, and Zeffirelli and Fellini’s movies.
The 56 member Manila Symphony Orchestra plays under the baton of Maestro Ruggero Barbieri.
