This year, a festival of various productions featuring the music of composer and Gawad CCP Para sa Sining awardee Ryan Cayabyab billed Mr. C at 60, A Musical Celebration will be staged at the Cultural Center of the Philippines’ Tanghalang Nicanor Abelardo (CCP Main Theater) throughout the year.
Cayabyab, also known as Mr. C, has made a mark in the music scene for his works, ranging from commissioned full-length ballets, theater musicals, choral pieces, a Mass set to unaccompanied chorus, and orchestral pieces, to commercial recordings of popular music, film scores and television specials.
Featured shows are The Music of Ryan Cayabyab on May 3, celebrating the milestone of the country’s musical giant in original Pilipino music (OPM), classical and musical theater composition. The ABS-CBN Philharmonic Orchestra conducted by Gerard Salonga, a 60-piece choir and some of the country’s distinguished musical performers will interpret Mr. C’s well-loved hits.
A concert of sacred music entitled Rise: Rebuilding from the Ruins takes place on June 11 at the Manila Cathedral. The event, presented in cooperation with Caritas Manila, features works for orchestra, chorus and solo voice. Maestro Olivier Ochanine and Jonathan Velasco will conduct the Philippine Philharmonic Orchestra and a hundred voice choir, respectively.
La Revolucion Filipina takes centerstage on July 25-27. It is Ballet Philippines’ restaging of Agnes Locsin’s modern dance masterpiece to celebrate the 150th birth anniversary of its lead character – Apolinario Mabini, the paraplegic, ‘brains of the Katipunan’, with music by Ryan Cayabyab.
Conversing with Mr. C on October 22, 3pm at the CCP Little Theater enables audiences to engage in a talk back with Ryan Cayabyab about his life in music and art.
Noli Me Tangere, The Concert will be staged on October 23-24. Ryan Cayabyab’s musical version of Noli Me Tangere with libretto by National Artist Bienvenido Lumbera is likewise a reunion concert of the country’s leading musical theater performers who have interpreted the roles of the enduring musical.
The Grand Chorale Recital of the Hands On Choral Workshop performs a Cayabyab choral opus led by the Philippine Madrigal Singers on October 25.
A new recording of Ryan Cayabyab’s reinvention of popular Filipino folk songs entitled Simfonia Filipiniana: Philippine Symphonic Airs will be launched by the Philippine Philharmonic Orchestra on November 14.
