The Philippine Philharmonic Orchestra welcomes the new year with their fifth concert for their 35th season, billed “Romancing the Classics,” on January 19, 2018, 8:00 pm at the Tanghalang Nicanor Abelardo (Main Theater) of the Cultural Center of the Philippines.

Under the baton of Maestro Herminigildo Ranera, the PPO will perform Manuel P. Maramba OSB’s Symphony Ode “La Naval,” Ferdinand David’s Trombone Concertino in E-flat, and Peter Tchaikovsky’s Symphony No.6 in B minor “Pathetique.”

The concert will feature Filipino trombone player Ricson Poonin, who has been known for his trademark musicality, his sound technique and his versatility as a soloist, ensemble and orchestra player.

Poonin started playing with the Banda 97, a local band based in Laguna, at age 9, and then pursued his music at the University of Santo Tomas (UST) in 2009, majoring in trombone performance.

While pursuing his college degree, he won first prize in the 2009 Music Competition for Young Artists (NAMCYA) Solo Category C held at the CCP, and traveled all over Asia as a member of the Asian Youth Orchestra (AYO–2011) and the Southeast Asian Youth Orchestra and Wind Ensemble (SAYOWE–2005-2006 and 2008-2010).

He joined the PPO as bass trombone player in 2012. He then went to pursue graduate studies at Johns Hopkins Peabody Conservatory in Baltimore, Maryland, United States where he earned his masters of music in trombone performance in 2016 and finished his graduate performance degree the following year.

Among his achievements there were: receiving the James Winship Lewis Memorial Prize Performance Award, performing Johann de Meij’s T-bone Concerto as the featured soloist in the Peabody Wind Ensemble’s concert in 2016, winning the first prize in the Peabody Excerpts Competition, actively performing as principal trombonist in Peabody orchestras and ensembles, among others.
