MONO8 announced that “Arbitrary Relics”, the exhibition of some of the works of Jonas Eslao will run until April 22 in Manila: BLK 113 (formerly Fox Square), 53 Connecticut St., Greenhills, San Juan City.
In Arbitrary Relics, Eslao is said to bring his practice closer to his community, where a fire broke out last year, leaving permanent physical and emotional damage to the residents. While checking the debris, he salvaged found objects and produced related images that now act as “seemingly random undertakings to fill an inexplicable void and mediate in the process of continuing. Here, objects become more than mere detritus of an unexpected event. Instead, they transform as paths to navigating loss—a mechanism to fill an inexplicable void and a symbolic reference to the process of recovery and survival.”
Eslao (b. 1984 in Manila; lives and works in Manila) has been holding exhibits since 2007. His past works contained themes that thrived on the effects of human intervention on nature and investigated the contribution of cultures and economies to climate change. Recently, he has been exploring abstract expressionism as he creates gestural landscapes using household tools.
Eslao received his BFA in Painting from the University of the Philippines, Diliman. His works have been featured at Art Fair Philippines since 2013 and at ALT Philippines.
