MATÉO’s ‘Lalim’ nominated for Folk Song of the Year at first-ever Filipino Music Awards

This nomination highlights MATÉO’s growing influence in the Filipino music scene and his dedication to modern kundiman, redefining the traditional Filipino love song for a contemporary audience.

Singer-songwriter MATÉO (Matthew Ong), one of the most compelling voices in contemporary OPM, has been nominated for Folk Song of the Year with his debut single “Lalim” at the first-ever Filipino Music Awards (FMAs), set for October 21 at the SM Mall of Asia Arena.

This nomination highlights MATÉO’s growing influence in the Filipino music scene and his dedication to modern kundiman, redefining the traditional Filipino love song for a contemporary audience.

Released only in 2024 as his first-ever single, “Lalim” began as a personal serenade and quickly captured the hearts of listeners nationwide, debuting at #1 on Spotify’s Viral 50 Philippines and now amassing over 36 million streams on Spotify. MATÉO’s other singles have also found remarkable success: “Pinipili” has surpassed 5 million streams, “Tungo” has over 1 million streams, and his recent remake of the OPM classic “Bato Sa Buhangin” has captured the hearts of a new generation of listeners. Collectively, MATÉO boasts over 1 million monthly listeners on Spotify, reflecting his widespread and growing appeal.

MATÉO’s musical journey began in grade school and developed at Kundirana, La Salle Greenhills’ prestigious music ministry known for producing icons like Gary Valenciano and Ogie Alcasid. Self-taught, he gained discipline and exposure to diverse styles, blending Filipino tradition with contemporary influences from Rey Valera, Johnoy Danao, Bruno Major, and Jacob Collier. His sound—rooted in deep emotion and Filipino heritage—positions him as a leading voice in modern kundiman, bringing timeless love songs into today’s world.

“This nomination is incredibly humbling. ‘Lalim’ was written from the heart as a simple serenade, and to see it embraced in this way is beyond words,” says MATÉO.

This achievement also marks MATÉO’s debut as a signed artist under Korean entertainment label Abyss Company, home to global icons Sunmi, MeloMance, and Sandara Park, further expanding his reach beyond OPM to the international stage.

With millions of streams and a growing international presence, MATÉO continues to craft music that touches hearts, honors Filipino heritage, and resonates globally. His nomination for Folk Song of the Year at the FMAs is a testament to his artistry and authenticity in the contemporary music landscape.
