The Cinemalaya Independent Film Festival is proud to present the 2017 Cinemalaya Campus, which is slated on August 8 and 9 at the CCP’s Little Theater.
The campus will focus on: What issues currently confront Philippine society? What does the film industry do to foreground these issues? What issues do filmmakers deal with in their films? What do they say about these issues? How do they present these issues?
According to 2017 Cinemalaya Campus co-director Clodualdo Del Mundo Jr., this year’s Cinemalaya Campus will go beyond the task of reading films which has been addressed before, and instead will look closely into the production of meaning. It will tackle questions such as: What is the role of the producer or the company in the whole scheme of film production? What is the role of the director, the screenwriter, and other members of the staff in the production of meaning? and What is the role of the viewer?
There will be seven sessions, starting with screenwriter Ricky Lee and director Adolfo Alix Jr. discussing “Beyond the Story: What Does the Screenplay Mean?”; while cinematographers Dix Buhay and Jay Abello will tackle “From Low Key to High Key: Shedding Light on the Moving Image.”
Artists Leeroy New and Toym Imao will talk about set designs in “Character, Color, Design and Meaning” session; while sound designer Corinne de San Jose will shed light on “Scoring Meaning with Music and Sound.”
The second day of the campus will kickstart with a session on “Cutting to Make Something Whole” by editors Tara Illenberger and Monster Jimenez. It will be followed by discussion on “Mise-en-scene and Meaning” by director Carlos Siguion-Reyna and Teng Mangansakan. Speakers Angeli Bayani, Baby Ruth Villarama-Gutierrez, Monster Jimenez, Bliss Lim and Richard Bolisay will hold a session on “Ano sa Tingin Mo? Reaching the Spectator.”
The Cinemalaya Campus is part of the Cinemalaya Independent Film Festival, which is a project of the Cinemalaya Foundation and the Cultural Center of the Philippines, in partnership with Ayala Malls Cinemas. Established in 2005, Cinemalaya is an all-digital film festival and competition that aims to discover, encourage and honor cinematic works of Filipino filmmakers.
To date, Cinemalaya has supported and promoted the production of 127 full feature independent films and 106 short films. Many of these films have won awards in local and international competitions and festivals. Through the annual festival, Cinemalaya has showcased over 1,000 works by independent filmmakers including full feature films, shorts, documentaries, Filipino film classics, and art films.
This year’s Cinemalaya will be held on August 4 to 13, 2017, at the CCP theaters and select Ayala Malls (Greenbelt 1, Glorietta 5, UP Town Center, TriNoma, Fairview Terraces, and Marquee Mall in Pampanga. There will also be the Cinemalaya Film Market on August 5 to 11, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., at the CCP’s Little Theater Lobby.
